Scotland, 1880. Two years after the body of a beautiful, unidentified young woman is found floating in a loch, Lavinia Averly arrives at nearby Bellcraig Castle with an instruction from her late father: uncover the truth of this infamous unsolved mystery.

He knew that Lavinia might succeed where others have failed. Because Lavinia has spent her life hiding an extraordinary gift, where she sees people’s emotions in vivid colours. But at Bellcraig, where she’s thrust into an unconventional world of artists and poets, scandalous love affairs and dubious pastimes, everyone seems to be hiding something. And she starts to suspect they’re all lying when they claim not to have known the dead girl.

Most mysterious of all, is young Asta Clifford.

Captivating, frustrating and utterly confounding, Lavinia must ask herself – has she finally found someone she can trust… or could Asta in fact be the killer she’s seeking?

A powerful story about a mysterious death, a castle filled with secrets, and a powerful forbidden love, from the bestselling author of No.23 Burlington Square.

This novel is part of the Averly Sisters trilogy, but each novel can be read as a standalone.
